LOCAL STUDENT AWARDED $10,000 BECAUSE OF JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF MANITOBA

Peter Mansbridge Journalism Award Presented at Order of the Business Hall of Fame 2010 Induction Ceremonies

Winnipeg, MB – May 12, 2010 – Riley Chervinski of Winnipeg, Manitoba (JA Manitoba)received the $10,000 Peter Mansbridge Journalism Award last night at the Order of the Business Hall of Fame 2010 Companion Gala Dinner Induction Ceremony in Toronto. Riley was one of six students who were recognized with Junior Achievement national scholarships and awards.

Presented to Riley personally by CBC Chief Correspondent Peter Mansbridge, the Peter Mansbridge Journalism Award is a post-secondary scholarship presented to a Junior Achievement student with a passion for broadcasting and journalism, and who exemplifies a commitment to positive change and promotes a vision of prosperity for our nation and the world.

Riley Chervinski is a grade 12 student at Dakota Collegiate. Born and raised in Winnipeg Manitoba, she has been an avid reader since a young age and has always wanted a career involving writing. She joined Junior Achievement from the advice of a friend, who predicted she would benefit and enjoy the creative side of business, and she has. She plans to attend both The University of Winnipeg and Red River Collegiate within the next few years and graduate with a journalism major from the Creative Communications program. After university, Riley hopes to travel the world to experience new cultures and gain global perspective before becoming a successful journalist.

“Junior Achievement has opened so many doors for me, connecting me to a lot of great people and giving me a chance to learn about business and working with others. It has given me a taste of the real world and what to expect in the future of business, along with providing me with a chance for leadership as a vice president of my company. JA has taught me the correct way to lead and motivate others to strive to work to the best of their abilities, and these are lessons I will never forget, even as a successful journalist someday.” said Riley.

In addition to the Peter Mansbridge Journalism Award, Junior Achievement awarded one $10,000 Peter Mansbridge Youth Leadership Award. Along with their scholarships, winners received an all-expenses-paid trip to Toronto and ticket to last night’s gala dinner where they introduced the new Canadian Business Hall of Fame Inductees.

About The Order of the Business Hall of Fame

As leading examples of achievement in business and in life, these individuals have demonstrated the qualities necessary to ensure the success and competitiveness of Canada in a global marketplace. As companions, they become mentors and role models for Junior Achievement students and Canada’s future business leaders.
